Dual-Boot // Mac OS X Snow Leopard + Windows 7 // on Samsung NC10 [English v2b]
If you’re looking for a German Tutorial, you can find it -> HERE
EDIT: Be careful when updating to 10.6.2! It’s possible, but be sure to search around the net for help on this topic, because Apple removed the support for Intel Atom CPUs on short notice. I will provide information here soon for this.
Credits go to -> Dell Mini Tutorial as this tutorial is based on this. As the procedure is very similar for the Dell Mini and the NC10, it might also work for other netbooks, eg the MSI Wind.
EDIT: By the way, I heard that the original Wifi device doesn’t work with Snow Leopard either, even though the Wiki of NetbookInstaller says so. I have switched mine with a Dell 1390 which I got from eBay real cheap. Give it a shot, it’s worth it.
If you use UMTS it might be a good idea to put your SIM card into a mobile phone and delete the PIN. Why? The Mac OS X Samsung Modemdriver doesn’t support PIN.
Before we start, please be aware that you need to follow this tutorial EXACTLY if you want it to work, especially the part where you create the partitions. I tried creating the partitions with GParted at first and couldn’t get it to work for hours.
First create:
A USB/SD installation Media of Windows 7 (below you will find instructions on how to do this)
A USB/SD installation Media of Mac OS X Snow Leopard patched with the latest NetbookMaker (see below for instructions)
Let’s get started.
- boot the Win7 USB/SB media
- click through the first two windows that appear (you will see a message "Setup is starting…")
- when you see above mentioned message hit SHIFT-F10 to enter CMD
- type in:
diskpart
list disk
select disk <number> (your hard drive, should be 0)
clean
convert GPT
create partition EFI size=200
in version 1 of this how to I ask you to figure out the partition sizes yourselves. I will setup my NC10 again during the next days/weeks and I will then come up with some suggestions here.An example follows. As I use Mac OS much more than Windows I personally want Mac OS to have the biggest partition. Take a look at my example and then judge about what you like to have. I also created a 3rd partition which I later formatted as Fat32 to exchange files between the 2 systems. But it’s up to you to decide if you need it.
create partition primary size=100000
create partition primary size=30000
create partition primary size=20000list partition
extend (this fills the rest of the drive with any space left over from building the partitions)
format fs=ntfs quick
exit
exit
- shutdown your NC10 by pressing the power button for 5 seconds
- replace the Win7 USB/SD media with the Mac OS X USB/SD media
- boot your Mac OS X USB/SD media
- during the installation, you will see the NTFS disk, which you won’t be able to use
- enter the Disk Utility and select the hidden "disk0s2" and erase it using Mac OS Journaled File System, name it OSX
- continue your installation onto the newly created OSX partition
- when done, reboot and boot the OSX installation media again
- this time start the NetbookInstaller application and let it to it’s thing
- then SHUTDOWN, don’t reboot
- insert your USB/SD Win7 boot media again and boot it
- follow standard procedures for installing Win7 onto partition 3 (if at this point it complains that Win7 cannot be installed onto this drive because of BIOS issues, reboot and do it again)
- when completed, download and install EasyBCD (Here)
- run EasyBCD and add your OSX Snow Leopard as an optional OS (generic x86), save the MBR with the two choices (you may want to decrease the countdown from 30 seconds to 10 or 5, but that’s up to you)
- reboot Win7
- see the TWO choices during startup
EDIT: Here some drivers for the NC10 and Windows 7 which I only found on the Polish and Chinese Samsung Support site:
SamsungConnectionManager NOR 1.6.9.0101
Easy Display Manager Win7 3.0.3.5
Audio-Driver
Of course you don’t need a premium account to get the files, but if you plan to get a Rapidshare Premium Account anyways, than you might consider doing that via this link -> Rapidshare Premium-Account
Thank you.
Done! Your NC10 will now boot with a menu of two operating systems.
How to make a bootable USB/SD Windows 7 Installation Media:
What you will need:
A 4 GB (or greater) USB/SD Stick/Card
A Win7 DVD
A Vista/Win7/Win2003/2008 Server working PC (to run the Installation) (XP won’t do, because robocopy, which will be used later in the process is only a part of Windows since Vista)
- start your working windows
- insert your media stick USB/SD
- run CMD (as Administrator if needed)
- type in:
diskpart
list disk (notice which is your USB/SD media drive)
select disk <number> (your usb/sd media as found in list of list of disk drives)
clean
create partition primary
select partition 1
active
format fs=ntfs quick
assign
exit
- insert the Windows 7 DVD into your drive and copy the contents using robocopy:
robocopy.exe <letter of drive which contains the win7 dvd>:\ <letter of your usb/sd medium>:\ /MIR
Done! You now have a bootable installation USB/SD media drive for Windows 7!
How to make a bootable USB/SD Mac OS X Snow Leopard Installation Media:
What you will need:
A 8 GB (or greater) USB/SD Stick/Card
A Mac OS X Snow Leopard DVD
A Mac OS X running PC / Netbook or real Mac
- Start the Disk Utility
- Restore OSX DVD to USB drive
- Run NetbookBootMaker (latest version HERE) to patch the USB
Done! You now have a bootable installation USB/SD media drive for Mac OS X Snow Leopard!
Donations welcome, thank you.

Thanks for the tutorial, everything worked, but there’s just one problem remaining:
How can you make a complete backup of your NC10 Hard drive, MBR and everything, so that in case you make a mistake with either OS in the future, you don’t have to spend a very long time setting everything up again?
I just went through this tutorial, which took a very long time, then spent hours (no, DAYS) finding a suitable program (HDClone Professional) that would make an image of the whole disc. I then tried to install OSX 10.6.3 as per this link
http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=197020&st=0
and it didn’t work, and now I have to start over, FROM THE VERY BEGINNING!! Very Frustrated!
So, if you could include a method to make a reliable backup of the NC10 hard drive, a step-by-step procedure for idiots like myself, I would be very grateful. A way to upgrade to 10.6.2 (so to run iPhone SDK) would also be appreciated!
OK, tried nevertheless….
SUCCESS!!!!!
Normal GUID install with NBI, partitioned via diskutility 2 partitions 1 OSX, 1 FAT,. Upgrade to 10.6.2. Afterwards install of WIN7 and EasyBCD. Both boot fine.
Hi,
Chameleon Bootloader will be overwritten in my tutorial with the Win 7 one anyways. But my experience was: If you do the slightest alteration in the process, it won’t work anymore.
So for example if you used another process to create the partitions than the one that you see in the tutorial, expect that it won’t work.
Bye,
Dennis
Hello,
if an OSX installation via NBI already exists, and a free partition, is it still possible to install Windows7 in the free partition and use EasyBCD afterwards or will I destroy the Chameleon Bootloader and/or the GUID table and thus render my OSX installation unuseable?
Sup mate?
Appreciate your comment.
Go for it,
admin
Took AGES to get this to work – turns out my memory key (the one I used for OSX) was flakey. I ended up just for the hell of it, about to give up kinda thing, using a portable hard drive I had. It worked! Right now installing OSX onto the netbook. Then I have to suffer through a win 7 install. Still It’ll be fun to show my mates my machine runs the best of both worlds. Time to use one of those apple stickers that came with my iphone
So, Hab endlich nen Mac gehebt und es mit der RC5-Version versucht… gleiches Problem…
boot error…
Hi again
Answering myself, actually…got the sleep to work (on battery only) by modifying Execute Disable Bit in BIOS to Enabled.
(found tip on MystiqueMac)
Thanks a lot for the tutorial. Worked flawlessly!
Only issues were/are:
-> Sleep doesn’t work (as mentionned above)
-> I couldn’t get Quicksilver to work (weird because it worked fine with Mysticus Leopard install) so used Spark instead
Danke für den Tipp
ich teste es am montag, dann komm ich wieder an nen Mac…
Ich werde dann berichten obs geklappt hat…
Versuch mal diese Version:
NetbookInstaller 0.8.3 RC5
Glaube nicht, dass es am BIOS liegt.
hab die version 0.8.3 (alpha) genommen…
vielleicht liegts ja an meinem bios hab die CA11 drauf…
Hi,
evtl. ne alte Version vom Netbookinstaller genommen?
Ansonsten: Keine Ahnung, vielleicht kann jemand anderes hier aushelfen?
Danke,
admin
Hi
Ich habe folgendes Problem:
habe alles genau nach der anleitung gemacht,
MacOS installation lief komplett durch, dann reboot, netbookinstaller ausgeführt
danach ausgeschaltet.
Ne Ahnung, was ich falsch gemacht habe?
Hi,
you’re welcome.
Yes, I have experienced this and as far as I know, there is no workaround for this …
Regards,
admin
Thanks for the instructions!! Overall worked great. I am now dual booting win7 and snow leopard. however, sleep isn’t working in that it won’t resume from sleep on either battery or ac power if I shut the lid. have you experienced this?
Hi,
that 140 GB thing is not an error. When HD vendors advertise their HDs, they count 1 MB = 1000 Bytes, although it’s wrong. 1 MB = 1024 Bytes. Because Apple thought it’s confusing for the users, they now count 1 MB = 1000 Bytes too since SL. But this again caused again a lot of confusion of the users which upgraded from Leo to SL …
To your problem: You are right, if you install OSX again, you won’t be able to boot into Win 7 anymore without fixing the bootloader. But I honestly don’t know how to do that. In the German version of my tutorial someone else had a similar problem but it seems he never found a solution.
I fear you only have one choice unless you google for a tool similar to EasyBCD for OSX: Backup your Win 7 stuff and repeat the whole installation.
Regards,
admin
When I used diskpart, it didn’t detect the entire harddrive. It only found 140 G or so of the total 160 G. Anyway, OSX install disc had no troubles so I just did my partitioning from there and installed it first.
But, to my problem. Couple of weeks later, I had myself with a totally broken OSX install. And it must we wiped and reinstalled.
I already have windows 7 on it, and I want to not touch that partition.
My worries are, after I reinstalled OSX, that I will have no way to get back into windows. How can I restore windows bootloader after successfull OSX install (and then reinstall EasyBCD so I can boot both) without thrashing the win7 partition.
Please help!
Hi!
First of all: Thank you very much for the feedback.
Somebody posted feedback on the German version of my tutorial regarding the N130 just a few days ago. I will translate it for you, since it should answer your question.
“Great Tutorial, installed 10.6.2 just like that on my Samsung N130, unfortunately Wifi is not working and the Dell 1395 which is working for the NC10 or N130 doesn’t fit. Unfortunately the Wifi device of the N130 is only half the size, PCI Express Mini half size, so one would need the Dell 1397. I use the Sitecom Nano Wifistick now, which uses the same chipset as the internal Wifi of the N130. I think it’s strange that Mac OS X doesn’t recognize the internal card then, since the chipset is the same …”
Best regards,
admin
Do you think it would work on a Samsung N130? thanks, great tutorial by the way and perfect english!!
OK This is what I used with 10.5.6 and Mysticus’ install. I thought this wasn’t needed with this install?
Thanks!
John
Hi John,
help is here!
Download the following:
http://rapidshare.com/files/308625309/Brightness.zip (unpack and put the folder “Brightness” into /Library/Scripts)
http://rapidshare.com/files/308625308/Quicksilver-b56a7.tar.gz (unpack and put the extracted file into “Applications”)
Then follow this guide from page 99 till end:
http://rapidshare.com/files/308413563/Samsung_NC10_Guide_v2.pdf
But be aware that this is a workaround, brightness control will then not function via function keys, but via windows key. You’ll get the idea if you read through the tutorial.
Have fun,
admin
Sorry…. The sound works great…
I have no Brightness control with the Fn-F12 keys/Insert.
Any help I’d appreciate it.
John
Update! Used NetbookMaker 0.8.4 RC to install Snow Leopard. Used NetBookInstaller 0.8.4 RC to update to 10.6.2. Oh man it was a breeze! I just have one issue – no sound from Fn+F12… Any ideas what the problem could be. On the mysticus forum I’ve read the German keyboard does not have the sound problem.
Thanks!
Thanks Man!
Hi John,
ich you use NetbookMaker 0.8.3 RC 4 to make your Mac OS X installation media you are ready to go.
BR,
admin
Thanks for the tutorial. Quick question… How easy will it be to update to 10.6.2 with your installation?
